Water: key facts a dairy farmer must know

If cows don’t have enough water then they eat less and milk production reduces. High yielding cows drink lots, an average of 3 litres of water for every litre of milk produced on top of it’s normal daily needs. It is essential that clean water is available at all times especially in the hot season when the demand for water increases significantly. All calves and youngstock must have water available 24/7. Calves will still drink all their milk. Animals need water so that they can eat forage and high energy or balanced feed.
